If you are a regular reader here at The Savvy Tourist, you already know that food is something we always check out no matter how far from home we travel. Well, just recently one of us had the opportunity to visit Pink's in Los Angeles, CA. so I thought I would share a little information about this special little Hollywood icon.
Pink's is probably the most famous hot dog stand in the country...certainly in LA! Located near the corner of Melrose and La Brea, Pink's can be found by looking for a crowd of people and following the fresh aroma of fresh chili and soft hot dog buns.
Pink's, unlike any other hot dog stand in America, has it's own parking lot attendant, although parking is free. It has been in the same location for almost 70 years now and it is not unusual to see a Rolls Royce pull up to Pink's. Movie Stars, well-known dignitaries, famous musicians, businessmen, housewives, school children...all have savored Pink's Famous Chili Dogs.
Paul Pink started his hot dog stand in 1939. It was only a large-wheeled push cart back then. The depression was on and the money was scarce. Pink's Chili Dogs, complete with a large warm bun, oversized hot dog, mustard, onions and thick chili sold for 10 cents each. His hot dog wagon was located in "the country" among the weeds, rolling hills and open spaces...that was the corner of La Brea and Melrose almost 70 years ago!
In 1946, Paul Pink traded in his hot dog wagon for a small building, constructed on the very same spot. The quality and service remain the same at Pink's even after all these years, so go check them out and order up a famous chili dog and see if you don't get it served hot in less than 30 seconds. The menu has expanded quite a bit through the years, but Pink's Hot Dog stand is still a quick lunch, a nostalgic trip into the past, and a delicious experience.
